Spoken Resistance

Part workshop, part performance troupe, Spoken Resistance is a laboratory where up and coming poets and performers can sharpen their writing and performance techniques and explore their social values.

Winner of the 2002 Mayor's Art Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist, Spoken Resistance is one of the only outlets in the city for young artists to come together across lines of race, ethnicity, income-levels, and life experiences.

Workshops

Currently, Spoken Resistance meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. At the meetings, members share their work and give each other feedback. We also invite in guest artists to lead workshops on writing and various aspects of performing. The workshops focus on developing the artistry and critical social analysis of members. We also read books together, go see shows of other artists, watch films, eat pizza, talk, analyze, and dream.

Performances

Spoken Resistance performances are known for blending poetry, monologues, music, rap, and movement with insightful social commentary. Spoken Resistance brings its performances to the stage, schools and universities, and community events. Several members have gone on to create their own one-person shows.
